The word Garbh in Sanskrit refers to the foetus in the womb, and Sanskar means education of sorts. Garbha sanskar can be traced back to ancient Indian texts like the Vedas and is also included in Ayurvedic texts. It focuses on the well-being of the mother and the healthy development of the child. Most importantly, it aims at building a lasting bond between mother and child right from the time of conception.

The practice has been a part of long-established Indian tradition and is also demonstrated in mythological stories of characters like Abhimanyu, Ashtavakra and Prahlad who were enlightened in their mother’s womb.

Garbha Sanskar is a multifaceted approach which one can achieve through these guidelines:

1. Yogasanas or light exercises/ stretches

2. Pranayam

3. Meditation

4. Visualization

5. Music therapy

6. Aroma therapy

7. Healthy eating habits

8. Communication with the baby

9. Taking a short vacation

10. Staying positive

For a baby, these practices have an immense positive impact which affects not only the anatomical development but also intellect and emotions. From a mother’s point of view, it means being in a good state mentally, physically and spiritually for herself and her growing baby. After all, a happy mommy means a happy baby!
